Trend and Turtle is a long-form podcast and real-time trading experiment that revisits one of the most influential ideas in market history: that great traders are made, not born.

Who we are - How we got here - Where we're headed... Trend and Turtle began with a simple question...

What happens when a market commentator stops talking—and starts trading by the rules?

For more than three decades, Ben Lichtenstein built a career explaining markets from the inside. From the trading floors of the CME and CBOT to anchoring daily live market shows on the Schwab Network, Ben’s role was to observe, analyze, and interpret price action in real time.

But commentary is not commitment.

Intro to Trend Following

Episode 2 revisits the legendary Turtle Trading experiment and the radical idea that traders could be taught using simple, rules-based systems. It strips away decades of myth to explain why the experiment mattered — and why its principles still matter today. This episode sets the foundation for everything that follows. The episode then shifts to the present, as Ben Lichtenstein commits to trading systematically in real time, guided by original Turtle Trader Jerry Parker.

Episode 3 defines what trend following really is — and what it is not — by rejecting prediction and reframing trading as a rules-based response to price. It establishes the mindset that drives the series: you don’t need to know what will happen next, only what you’ll do when it does. The episode breaks down why being “right” is irrelevant and why consistency matters more than conviction.

Episode 4 moves from philosophy into execution, focusing on how trend followers actually get into and out of trades. It introduces the logic behind entries, exits, and stop-losses — not as predictions, but as predefined responses to price movement. The episode explains why losses are expected, small, and necessary — and why risk control is a core premise of trend following.

Meet Your Hosts

In the series, Ben Lichtenstein documents his journey openly—learning, trading, and managing risk in real time under the mentorship of original Turtle Trader Jerry Parker. His role is not to predict outcomes, but to ask the questions, follow the rules, and confront the psychological realities of systematic trading as they unfold.

Jerry Parker is one of the original Turtle Traders, personally trained by legendary trader Richard Dennis during the famous 1983–1984 Turtle Trading experiment—an experiment that helped define modern systematic trend following.
